Review: Oli Silk—The Limit’s The Sky (by Ronald Jackson) April 19, 2009 - O.k., so The Limit’s The Sky is no longer just hot out of the studio. It’s been around for a couple or so months…but HOT it is nonetheless. Keyboardist Oli Silk’s second colossal hit album should have come as no surprise, as talent like him is generally no fluke but more like that brewing storm or a tornado in the making. Actually, that storm arrived with his debut album, So Many Ways. It’s full blown now. The Limit’s The Sky is proof positive of that, my friends. From the beginning, and with a last name like that, he was a smooth jazz event just waiting to happen. Well, and this is probably news to no one, he’s happened.
Accompanied by saxman Jaared and a whole host of others schooled in polished smooth jazz, Silk offers slice after slice of intoxicating grooves built on the best of melodies and ripe hooks. Tracks like the opening and title track, Seventh Heaven, That Kinda Love, and the crazy, kinda slinky Get It Together (with its Vocoder element) combine varying degrees of funk and smoothness that can make a project like this a standout anywhere in the world.
Capturing the spotlight so early on in his career, Silk joins a handful of other insightfuls who simply have what it takes to keep the party going with style and class. For the smooth jazz faithful, I am probably preaching to the choir, but to those who’ve only heard the name (or maybe not even gotten that far), Silk is as good an introduction as any to this fabulous sound-rich world of smooth—no, groove--jazz (hmm, groove jazz. Does that make me the first to try that term on for size?).
The album is obviously still out there making its rounds and captivating listener after listener, so you may as well find out what all the fuss is about. Newbies to smooth jazz: Take a chance here. Hey, the limit’s the sky! – by Ronald Jackson
