Usher Puts Us To Sleep
June 6, 2008 – I saw Usher on the season finale of Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago, well, at least host Steve Carell was good.  Usher seems to be trying too hard to be Michael Jackson – Hey buddy, I’ve seen all those moves before. His last disc “Confessions” from 2004 was a big hit and the new one, “Here I Stand” was released last Tuesday.

Peter White drags out Christmas Tree
June 5, 2008 – Peter White might not be the most graceful performer or the best looking, actually he’s quite unassuming but his talent and spirit have been the glue that word of mouth superstars are made out of. More.

The disc features help from Will.i.am and Bryan-Michael Cox.  Usher put the album together at his home studio in Atlanta with long-time friend and musical partner, Jermaine Dupri. I think he spent too much time watching paternity tests on Maury. On quick listen the album just seems a tad Heinz 57, Usher always comes off as derivative, still trying to sound like everyone else. Listening to the slower “Moving Mountains” a half baked idea that begs the question, Usher could you maybe work a little harder on a freakin’ tune? Stop stealing ideas that were tired 20 years ago.  “Love in This Club” featuring Young Jeezy invents another freeway of imitation.

Here is an artist who has spent so many years trying to shoplift every R&B singer that his own road back to himself has been paved over too many times. He can’t come home, he probably doesn’t even know what that means. One tune after another sounds like a rip-off riff, beat or pretentious “give me a break” cheesy line.

Billy Joel Working with Marc Anthony?
June 3, 2008 - My first thought was, "What the hell is Billy Joel Thinking?” Word comes out today that fabulous Piano Man is working on some tunes with, of all people, Marc Anthony. More.

Since the beginning, this artist has consistently produced nothing new under the sun and this album is probably the best example of that. “Love you Gently” is easily the biggest rip-off. On one line Usher sings “got that Al Green and Marvin Gaye too,” he should be arrested for even mentioning these musical innovators – at least those guys saw a brilliance in the unknown and could bake it from scratch.

This is an album that’s creeping to No. 1 on Billboard and if we can only judge ourselves on where we are right now, the question is, do we not crave more than this? After all, the mind expanding, liberating, ground breaking musical climaxes we’ve had that made us dance, sweat and cry this is what we accept? Are we this numb? Does he deliver this old wine cuz we want it? “Here I stand” almost makes the new Mariah Carey album sound good….no, what am I nuts? They are bookends from sonic hell. – by John Beaudin
