David Crawford: Access to "Shangri-La "
Nov. 6, 2007 - David Crawford has had some fertile life experiences leading up to his latest project "Shangri-la. The Flutist got here via a strong education in both Jazz and Classical and has shared the stage with Ahmad Jamal, Stevie Wonder and Isaac Hayes and arranged strings for Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, Mary G.Blige, and the Whispers

Playing an instrument such as the flute in smooth jazz is not obvious, because of its difficulty. As the musician confirmed to Smooth Jazz Now, "The flute is light & sweet in sound and is very difficult to project it as a lead or dominating instrument. Most saxophonist respect the instrument because the degree of difficulty to play and most audiences view the flute as a cool, sweet, light embellishing sound. When compared with a sax, trumpet, etc. it's harder for the flute to measure up to the standard of a leading instrument." Bearing this in mind, you may appreciate this CD, which came to fruition after a lengthy process. As David told this writer: "I was still skeptical to finishing a full length CD, so I sort of dragged my foot to getting material and musicians together until I was encouraged by my peers to complete one."

And the result is worth listening to, as David Crawford has produced a gorgeous collection of 10 well-crafted soothing tracks. This musical journey starts with a great escape to "Caribbean Nights," then to an astonishing rendition of the famous Jackson Five hit, "Never Can Say Goodbye" sung by Gloria Gaynor and so many other artists. Then follow an hypnotic tune "Shy Am I", a romantic Italian ballad "Te amo", a captivating "Brazilian Sunrise", a fascinating "Jazz me", a restful "Shangri-La", a peaceful rendition of a 1999 Kenny Chesney hit "You Had Me From Hello", and to reach the peak of serenity, a mild groove track "Renaissance " and a slightly hip-hop version of "Caribbean Nights", "Caribbean Swing".
