Brian Hughes
Live   Sylvan House Music
ISeptember 14, 2007 - When I first heard the amazing fretwork from Brian Hughes years ago programming my Jazz show, I immediately could feel the influences of Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery and even some George Benson.
Intimate, soulful and passionate would put it as simply as possible, and he is a five-time recipient of the SOCAN Jazz and Instrumental Composer of the Year.
Now in between his busy schedule touring with Loreena McKennitt, he has released his first live CD that is pure ear candy for all Smooth Jazz fans. Tracking in at over 72 minutes Brian and his tight band have delved into his back catalog for an evening of pure joy. From the opening moments of "While The World Slowly Turns" you feel you are in for a special evening of entertainment. Brian's playing throughout is so smooth and so unrestrained that you might not even realize just how hard the actual playing is. Choosing tracks from 5 of his 6 solo albums will only enhance your thirst to hear all of his solo material, and catch Brian and his band when they tour. Highlights are found on every track, but some of my favorite moments are "The Beat" a track originally found on 1999's "Shaken Not Stirred" Cd with soaring guitar work from Brian and some wonderful percussion work from Tal Bergman, "Nasca Lines" a track from 1992's "Under One Sky" starts with some flamenco guitar and leads to visions of the old world Spain…it is exhilarating to feel the very vibe, and he delves into 1993's "Along The Way" for several tracks of which my favorites are 'Omaha Unbound' which features Brian's intricate yet fluent guitar work and the flowing mastery of 'Thinkin Of You'. Summing it up this is a superb performance by a master guitarist and his flawless band and I only wish that I had been in the audience that night, but listening to the new "Brian Hughes Live" you will feel you actually are….and isn't that what a great Cd is supposed to do. - by Paul Ericson
