101.9 in New York is NO More
February
7, 2008 - As of Wednesday, February 6, 2008, CD
101.9FM went off the air and New York has lost it's smooth
jazz station. In a letter to fans on its website Emmis Communications
released the following statement:
"The
staff of CD101.9 would like to thank you for your support
over these past 20 years of Smooth Jazz CD101.9. Due to
a declining audience for Smooth Jazz over the past few years,
we are sad to announce that Smooth Jazz will no longer be
available on the 101.9 signal. On February 5th we launched
an innovative new adult rock format on the 101.9 frequency
called 101.9 RXP The New York Rock Experience. 101.9 RXP
is a respectful and intelligent mix of new music, classic
rock and alternative - we invite you to try it."
For those individuals who have HD radios, CD 101.9 will still
broadcast on their HD 2 channel. Fans will also be able to
continue logging on to CD1019.com for the latest in smooth
jazz news and events. - by Joy

Smooth Jazz Radio Arbitron Ratings Results:
May
19, 2005 - Arbitron's Winter 2005 radio ratings have been
released, and it features several Smooth Jazz stations with
happy returns. Stations on the up: Detroit's
"V 98.7" (WVMV) moved up to 5th place ages
12 and older. San
Diego's KIFM 98.1 vaulted to 3rd. Both Denver's
"Smooth Jazz 104.3" (KJCD) and Miami's
"Love 94" (WLVE) climbed over 1 full share
and placed 8th and 7th respectively, while Tampa's
WSJT 94.1 and Minneapolis'
KJZI 100.3 increased exactly 1 full share to 6th and
11th respectively. Sacramento's
KSSJ 94.7 did even better, raising nearly 1 and a half
shares all the way to 2nd overall. Seattle's
KWJZ 98.9 also had a stellar season, jumping to 3rd.
Springfield,
MA's locally-owned "106.3
Smooth FM" (WEIB) had an impressive showing itself,
jumping over a full share to notch 16th. Not quite enjoying
the same success was New
York's "CD 101.9 New York Chill" (WQCD), which
struggled in its first full ratings period since implementing
Chill music into its playlist, dropping to a tie for 16th.
Phoenix's KYOT 95.5
dipped to 12th, its lowest 12 and older ratings showing
in quite some time. - by Nick

CD
-101 Goes Chill
January
26, 2005 - - New York City's CD 101.9 (WQCD), which has
been playing Contemporary Jazz since 1988, raised many eyebrows
on November 22 when they made the decision to incorporate
"Chill" music into their heritage Smooth Jazz
format. While you can still hear the majority of your favorite
Smooth Jazz artists on WQCD, they dropped the Smooth Jazz
positioner that day and are now going by the moniker "New
York Chill". Chill music is a mix of electronica, world,
and dance music, with core artists including Zero 7, Tosca,
Massive Attack, Moby, and Chris Coco. The decision was made
by new Program Director Blake Lawrence. At first listen,
the mix of chill music combined with Smooth Jazz seems a
little bit out of sort. But looking deeper, chill music
does have similarities to Smooth Jazz. It includes a mix
of instrumentals and vocals, just like Smooth Jazz. Artists
like Praful and Down To the Bone easily crossover into both
categories. Some analysts feel chill music eventually will
be imported commonplace into Smooth Jazz radio, such as
new age and adult contemporary have in the past. Chill music
appeals to a younger demographic, something Smooth Jazz
programmers have been craving, as ratings show the listening
audience of Smooth Jazz radio stations continues to age.
And the early returns are positive on "New York Chill".
In the Autumn New York City Arbitron ratings book, WQCD
raised six-tenths of a share to a tie for ninth place in
the 12 years and older ratings. - Nick Langan
