Will Smooth AC replace Smooth Jazz?
June 5, 2008 – Some radio owners are running away from Smooth Jazz faster than Paris Hilton at a Mensa conference. There is a major evolution going on with the format so much so that radio ratings company Arbitron has just added a new descriptor Smooth AC. Radio Ink.com reported today that Smooth Jazz is an option to replace Smooth Jazz – a name that is sometimes a problem with agency buyers.  If a station wants to change their descriptor they need to contact Arbitron. The leading consultant in Smooth Jazz, Broadcast Architecture says it has approved the new descriptor, effective immediately.

Dan Weiner GM of KTWV-FM in Los Angeles said, "Our format is an AC hybrid with many contemporary vocals and instrumental covers. Over twenty years ago 'New AC' was launched and the audience began describing the music as 'Smooth Jazz.' Today the listeners still identify positively with that description but in agencies we feel that 'Smooth AC' is a better way to describe the format."

The Smooth AC tag, “really hits the mark,” says Greater Media/Philadelphia WJJZ Station Manager Jim Brown. He says, “It more accurately describes our format today for the industry. These days our station is more mainstream and mass appeal than it was years ago. When you attend WJJZ sponsored concerts and talk to our successful advertisers they tell us that this is the 'money demo'... adults with disposable income. This music is all that jazz and more, and the new descriptor captures that feeling better."  - by John Beaudin
