Interview
with Daryl Stuermer April, 2007 -
John
Beaudin - What is the sound of the new album?
Daryl
Stuermer - My previous albums explored
my more eclectic and contemporary jazz side.
Sometimes I would combine my lighter nylon
string guitar songs with some mid tempo to
heavier up tempo electric compositions. With
this new album I decided to focus in on my
more overdriven electric guitar playing. These
are probably my most energetic and intense
compositions. There is also a couple mid tempo
ballads, but even they have a simmering under
current of energy. I feel it's my most focused
album to date.
John
- What do you feel the progression is from
album to album for you? Is there a certain
sound that you're heading towards or do you
like to follow your nose?
Daryl
- Generally I try not to repeat myself.
I don't want to get bored of myself and I
of course don't want my fans to get bored.
But my previous album (Rewired-The Electric
Collection) was a collection of my most energetic
electric songs from my back catalog. It was
sort of a "best of" that style.
With remastering and edits it felt like a
brand new album. What I was trying to do was
to lay the ground work for this new direction.
John
- Were you shocked on the Genesis reunion?
You have been saying it might happen but it's
now actually happening..
Daryl
- There was always some loose talk of a
reunion but it never became a serious discussion
until last year. I was on tour with Phil Collins
in 2005 when I first got word of a possible
tour but was sworn to secrecy. We didn't formally
get together until October 2006 to see if the
magic was still there. We rehearsed in New York
for 2 weeks and went through the songs that
would work best for the upcoming tour.
