Aug 7/03 John, - I read your review of Alex DeGrassi and thought it was very well written; positive but descriptive. It didn't sound like PR. What's your procedure for accepting submissions for review? I would like to send you "Animal Dreams". Previews are available on www.cdbaby.com Regards. - Response - As we are expanding we will review most types of music. Our focus will continue to be Smooth Jazz and New Age though. July 18/03 Imagine my surprise when out of feeling nostalgic for the old days of " Nite
Lite" with "John Bowdin" (Beaudin)) , that it lives out at the coast . The
days of waiting are over. Your program was what kept me sane during the
trying times of a new business and new family; all those beautiful "new age"
vibes. I have 2 cassettes of random programs from 1986/7 ? I am tired of
them at times but hey it is only 3 hours worth. I can now find the music
that helps to keep me calm.... I was about 35 years at the time. I will
keep in touch. - Response - Thanks for writing! I miss that show - a lot! - John

The highlight for me was CKXM FM in Edmonton - I loved the atmosphere working in that little cabin beside CFRN TV. I hear from so many people who used to listen to that show in Edmonton. - John penderby@shaw.ca

March 17/03 Why are there hardly any mentions of Winnipeg's Cool FM in your sites radio page? You should be supporting this new trend setting station. - Response - We only report what we receive and so far Cool FM in Winnipeg have not volunteered very much information having said that let me remind you that they just launched a month ago so this is a very busy time for them. Program Director George Raymond, Music Director Walle Larsson and Promotions director Angie Lamirande have all assured me that they will send me music and promotional updates when the dust settles. Plus starting April 1st Smooth Jazz Now will interview one Smooth Jazz host each month from either Cool FM in Winnipeg, The Wave in Hamilton or The Breeze in Calgary. March 8/03 John: Are any of Canada's major broadcasters considering converting any of Vancouver's far-too-numerous rock stations to smooth jazz? - Response - Hi Bob - No not as far as I know. Before Christmas there was a rumour that Kiss FM would flip to Smooth Jazz after thier month of 100% Christmas programming. Thier music director Doreen Copeland has had at least limited exposure to the New Age side of the format when she hosted 'The Wave Of Vancouver' on Kiss in the 90's. Instead thier parent company Rogers decided to flip to a Bob format(classic Hits) in this case calling it Jack FM - As if Vancouver needed another station like this. I did Smooth Jazz in the evening at QM-FM from 1990 to 2001 and we were always asked this same question but we never flipped and that's probably a good thing since we are number one by a long shot 25-54 (Smooth Jazz would be very succesful in Vancouver but I doubt it would get the numbers QM-FM is getting now). CHUM who owns QM-FM did apply for a Smooth Jazz licence a few years ago along with five other applicants but of course the Urban application won. To make a long story short...No..I have heard nothing. I have heard from a few people across the country toying with the idea but not in Vancouver. Let me know if you hear anything. - John Bob Prosser

Hi John, - I stumbled across your site after reviewing some content on the cdbaby.com site that contained a link to Daryl Stuermer's new CD. There was a reference on Daryl's homepage to a review on your site. Great review (interviewer and interviewee). :-) - I first heard Daryl's playing on JLP's Engimatic Ocean album due to an interested in Allan Holdsworths' playing and music. I must say that your interview with Daryl was very thoughtful and articulate. - That lead me to do some more reading of the content on your site. I am so glad that you have been pioneering the effort (it seems almost single-handedly) to bring "smooth jazz" to the radio market. However, I was disappointed to learn earlier this year that a CRTC application for a smooth jazz station in Vancouver had been turned down in favour of a "urban music" station. Keep on keeping on.... I know it will happen in due time. - By the way, I read some of the history in the About section about your Night-Light program. I used to listen to your program faithfully and secretly wished it was a 24/7 format on a local station. I recall hearing you even play some Allan Holdsworth and Stanley Clarke material periodically during that time. That is rare to hear even today, let alone back then. It was sad to see the program go off the air. I believe "The Wave" took its place in Vancouver during the time that "new age" hit the mainstream. - Thanks and keep up the good work. - Response : Brad - Thanks so much for the feedback. Loosing the application to an Urban station in Vancouver was one of the low points in my broadcasting career. There was a big bad rumour going around last year that the CRTC commissioners had decided to award the license to a Smooth Jazz applicant but couldn't decide on who that would be. The rumour was that it was between two of the six Smooth Jazz applicants and they were at a stalemate. Let me stress this was a rumour but it goes like this - because they couldn't decide they jumped ship with their Smooth Jazz idea and gave it to the independent applicant for Urban. I know it sounds insane but the whole thing makes one scratch the old noggin. Smooth Jazz will come back to Vancouver someday and I hope to be there when it happens. I miss programming the format a lot!!! As for Daryl Stuermer he has to be one of the nicest guys I've ever interviewed. John

Oct 5/02 Hi John! I came upon your webpage accidentally through the Marc Jordan interview and after looking at the entire site, must tell you how impressed I am. I have been in the record business for 30 years, and without going into my whole bio, started with CTI Records from its in inception in Canada (1971). I have started a new label specializing in smooth jazz. . Our first product should be released in the
new year. At the moment, the label will concentrate on the best of our Canadian Smooth Jazz Artists. I'd love to talk when you have a chance.

Sept 26/02 I listened to your show in Edmonton years ago and now here you are in Calgary. Welcome back to Alberta! Your choice of music has changed a lot from your days in Edmonton. I liked your old style better.
Response : Hi Karen it's great to be back in Alberta. As for the music on

Aug 16/02 Since you are posting bitching emails from old listeners of your old jazz/new age show in Edmonton I want to know whatever happened to those two brother that made up the band the Bugs? I know they formed another band after that but i can't remember the name. Andreas Schwabe was Mozart next to them. They were simply the worst musicians in the universe. I wish people would stop calling Andreas Schwabe down. I have fond memories of songwriting night. I listened every thursday. I miss your show John now i'm stuck with that hippie on CKUA. Response : Nick you are referring to Bill & Dan Crammer who did form a New Age band called the Bugs and later Paramdam. I hear Dan Crammer is working in a music shop in Edmonton. I have not heard from his brother Bill Crammer in years. - John Nick , Leduc Alberta
Aug 9/02 Thanks for posting the older charts on Smooth Jazz and New Age. Ned , California
Aug 4/02 I noticed a few people bitchin' about Andreas Schwabe on this page. I agree he wasn't the most accomplished keyboard player but I did love his music. Where is he now? Response : I spoke with Andreas about one year ago and he was still living in Edmonton. After we stopped doing songwriting nights on CKXM-FM in Edmonton he got into TV. Last year he was designing the Edmonton Oilers web site. He still works on his music. - John Beth Steer, Edmonton
July 27/02 How about doing more features on Canadian traditional Jazz acts. Smooth Jazz is so light weight. Response : Peter there are great Canadian sites that cover the traditional Jazz acts here in Canada. ejazznews.com is one. we cover Smooth Jazz hence the name of the site and we are happy covering the genre along with New Age and world acts. I do appreciate your honesty - John Peter Grandig , Toronto

May 16/02 John, This is too wierd. I used to listen to you while I studied my exams at U of A so many years ago. I was looking for some data on the Windham Hill boys and my search engine brought me here. Remember that Pat Metheny Listening party you had at the station? I was one of the contest winners. I still have those ten CDs you gave me .I'll forward a picture I have of both of us from that night. I was also at the Montreux concert you put together. Any chances of you coming back to Edmonton? That was a magical show you had, why did you leave Edmonton? I wasn't a fan of the Andreas guy you had on but you set the standard on being real on the air, I always felt like you were on my sofa doing your show. Please get back to me. - Response- Wow thanks for your very kind words Peter. I remember you from that Metheny Listeners party and I remember you were the only one with a camera. You kept telling me to get a haircut. I miss Alberta. I was actually in Edmonton a few weeks ago. The show was cancelled at CKXM-FM when the company(Sunwapta) was sold to Electrohome. They just wanted to change the format. That's radio! I've heard from so many people from Edmonton..thanks alot - John Peter L.

Is there any way that you can promote his music here in the U.S. - Response : Smooth Jazz Now is not affiliated with the Wave in L.A. though we plan to feature more interviews with some radio industry people in the U.S. It's only a matter of time before they discover him, we will do our best - John Debra

April 9/02 It's been a lot of fun. This is how I look at interviews. If you connect with the certain interviewer I feel it's almost like therapy because you're bringing out some things that maybe you haven't said out loud before. You really have made me think about what was an important moment. I felt like I was on 'Inside the Actors Studio' where the guy asks them very different questions.
