Rik Emmett & Dave Dunlop Top Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards
April 27, 2007 - The Strung Out Troubadours featuring Rik Emmett and Dave Dunlop topped the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards tonight with two nods. The duo's self titled CD picked up "Album of the Year" and the Troubadours were named "Group of the Year." A duo of a different kind, husband and wife team Marc Jordan and Amy Sky each picked up a prize, Jordan was named "Male Vocalist", an honour he also received in 2005 and Sky won for "Best Original Composition" for "Everything Love Is" co-written by Eddie Schwartz. Kellylee Evans won as "Female Vocalist" beating out Molly Johnson, Liberty Silver, Carol Welsman and Sky. Welsman was "Keyboardist of the Year" for the second straight time and Johannes Linstead was named top guitarist. Warren Hill scored a hat trick as "Wind Instrumentalist" for the third straight year. Al Jarreau picked up "International Vocalist" and Nick Colionne who performed at the show was "International Instrumentalist." Gary James of Wave 94.7FM - Hamilton/Toronto was named top "Broadcaster" which marks another hat trick. The Wave, the awards co-chair, has had their announcers win each year in that category. The awards ceremony was an event of grand performances, Jazz supergroup Spyro Gyra who received the George Benson Lifetime Achievement Award also performed as well as winning duo Marc Jordan and Amy Sky. The evening was a huge hit with the sell out and show stopping sets by Brian Culbertson, Warren Hill, Gabriel Mark Hasselbach, Carol Welsman, Maysa, David Pack, Jeff Lorber and host Alexander Zonjic. - By John Beaudin
