Michael Buble Wins Two Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards
March 7, 2008 – Pop/crooner Michael Buble topped the Canadian Smooth Jazz awards tonight winning two prizes – ‘Male Vocalist of the Year’  and ‘Best Original Composition,’ for “Everything,” co-written by Alan Chan and Amy Foster-Gillies. It’s the fourth and fifth overall awards for Buble. The Ceremony hosted at Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, Ontario featured performances by Smooth Jazz superstar Peter White, winner of ‘International Instrumentalist’ award and newcomers Allistair Elliott and  Kristian Alexandrov who took home ‘Wind Instrumentalist’ and “Keyboardist’ awards.  Jazz great Diana Krall was named ‘Female Vocalist,’ for a second time, it’s also her fourth overall award since the shows inception in 2005.  Randy Crawford was the winner of ‘International Vocalist.’  Jesse Cook picked up ‘Guitarist of the Year’ for a second time. Carol Welsman performed an amazing original version of ‘What a Fool Believes.’ And shortly after was back on stage accepting her ‘Album of the Year’ award for her self titled album. Host Alexander Zonjic the man who year after year has kept the show flowing with his quick wit refined music finally won ‘Broadcaster of the Year.’ The flutist has been nominated in that category for the fourth year. Awards co-chair John Beaudin of Smooth Jazz Now.com said “This is the proudest moment for the genre each year. Interestingly, just when fans of the format are worried about the future with stations in New York, Washington and Calgary flipping to different formats the proof of the talent is on that awards stage every year.” Other performers included Nominee Alfie Zappacosta singing his hit ‘Dreams will come True’ with the house band and Warren Hill brought-it with ‘Gimmie Love’ featuring his own band Tony Steele, Steve Weingart, Wayne Gerard and Rochon Westmoreland. Former Montreal native Les Sabler also took the stage with his big hit ‘Food Chain.’ Dave Sereny and Darren Rahn, Janita and Slim man and Brian Hughes also performed. – By Shannon Edwards
