The 3rd Annual Canadian
Smooth Jazz Awards will pay tribute to one of the
true Smooth Jazz supergroups - Spyro Gyra. Forming
in Buffalo in the early seventies they defined American
Jazz fusion. Today they are smooth, worldly and still
on top of their game. Legends have a tendency to never
look back.

Spyro
Gyra Biography:
Spyro
Gyra has an optimistic commitment to the present and
future as it simultaneously celebrates 25 years of
recording and its first release of the new millennium.
"We're
grateful to still be going strong, we're feeling great
about ourselves and we're all healthy and in a good
frame of mind, so there's a lot to celebrate,"
says saxophonist Jay Beckenstein. "People are
still eager to hear what we're doing, and they've
allowed us to make music that's both fun and fulfilling.
Had filmmaker Ken Burns decided to address the last
thirty years of contemporary jazz in his recent PBS
documentary Jazz, the influence of Spyro Gyra on the
past generation would have been hard to ignore. The
band's story is one of modern music's most oft-told
tales, beginning with Beckenstein leading a group
of revolving musicians around the Buffalo jazz scene
circa early '70s. More

"I've
had the pleasure of playing in the time slot before
Spyro Gyra at a several jazz festivals. It's great to
see a band that has stayed together as long as they
have and still perform their music with energy and taste"!
- Daryl Stuermer |
"From
the seventies to now, from 'Morning Dance' to the current
project, Spyro Gyra has been a legendary group in the
Contemporary Jazz movement. One of the pioneers of a
sound that is still copied today, I'm very happy Spyro
is getting this recognition and lifetime achievement
award." - Deservingly so, congratulations!
- Lee Ritenour |
"When
I was a student at Berklee School of Music in Boston
I heard some music that left a lasting impression on
me forever! That band was Spyro Gyra. The Saxophone
sound was inspiring and infectious. I am now a colleague
and label mate of Jay Beckenstein the man behind that
sweet sound. Julio Fernandez has played on several of
my own projects and I share a band with Dave Samuels,
(one of the original members) called the Fantasy Band.
I guess I can say that. When I first heard Spyro Gyra,
I would have never guessed that these guys would have
such an impact on my life. Congratulations on your Lifetime
Achievement Award! It's well deserved!" -
