Downing went from 215 pounds to 115 is on a promotional speaking tour to talk about his challenges and to promote his new album “After Tonight.” He told Essence.com, "Obviously when they see me they are in shock and amazement because I am walking again," said Downing. "Thank God for his mercy and my therapy. But we talk about the music and my illness." The singer talked to fans in Chicago, Detroit and Washington, D.C. He gives thanks to his family, fans and faith. Downing is married to singer Audrey Wheeler and credits her for giving him strength, “It's a true testament to your wedding vows when you say for sicker or poorer, they mean it,” says Downing. – by John Beaudin

Downing Diagnosed With Chronic Disease

18, 2007 - Our thoughts and prayers go out to Will Downing.
The extraordinary performer has just been diagnosed
with polymyositis a debilitating chronic inflammatory
disease of the muscles that can lead to paralysis.
The 46 years old singer who first noticed the
symptoms this past December said he felt very
tired and sick and has since cancelled all touring
for 2007.

in hospital since the beginning of the year,
Beaudin says, "I'm not a religious man
but I truly believe in the power of prayer and
I say we all pray for Will, he's a good man."
Downing's new album for Peak Records will still
be released in September as his voice is not

here. He has done what many have tried before
him - to own old Christmas classics without
sounding pretentious or self gratifying.
If I hear another crescendo craving diva
this season there could be trouble. One
of my musical mentors told me years ago,
"If an album makes you crave to know
the artist better, to read those liner notes

Downing Offers New Christmas Album
November
4, 2004 - Christmas just got a little bit
better. Will
Downing will give our holiday classics
his rich baritone treatment via his new
album "Christmas, Love and You"
on GRP/Verve. The album will feature a few
choice cameo's including keyboards from
Joe Sample on "Love on Christmas Morning,"
Jonathan Butler ads guitar on "Christmas,
Love and You," and Najee giving "Christmas Time Is Here"
a little flute. Saxophonists David
Sanborn and Kirk
Whalum will also be on the CD. Expect
to hear "The Little Drummer Boy,"
"The First Noel," "White
Christmas" and "Have Yourself
a Merry Little Christmas." Downing
says he wanted the album to concentrate
on the feeling of home and the importance
of family during the holiday season. "Christmas,
Love and You" will be released November
9.
