Doug
and Mary Kirk - Behind the Mic for December December
1, 2004 - The Wave in Hamilton, Canada's first 24/7 Smooth Jazz station launched
in September of 2000. Owners Doug and Mary Kirk remember the day well, when they
talk about their ground breaking station they speak like proud parents and like
responsible elders they plan their steps carefully. We asked the couple if other
Canadian Broadcasters and fans thought their Smooth Jazz venture was nuts? "When
we decided to do it I don't think there were enough people who knew enough about
Smooth Jazz to even know if we were nuts or not," says Doug Kirk with a big
laugh. Mary adds, "I don't think we thought we were nuts for trying it though,
we thought Canadians were nuts for not having tried it a long time ago."
Though not a huge ratings winner yet The Wave is certainly setting the pace for
the format in Canada. Mary and Doug Kirk are our "Behind the Mic" feature
this month. Read our Interview from Nov. 2004. Hamilton's
