says Brown. “You want everyone to celebrate with you and you want to thank people who have helped you along the way! So coming from a place of gratitude with a huge sense of accomplishments, it was a great evening!” In her exclusive interview with Smooth Jazz Now she told us about her best night ever as a musician. Interestingly, Brown told us she couldn’t narrow it down to just one night.
Best Night #1 – “Back several years, in an intimate, 300 seat theatre, I was performing a concert with a large eighteen piece Big Band that included many of Toronto's big named musicians and I could not have been surrounded by better! I was featured on an Alto Sax solo playing Harlem Nocturne, one of my favourite songs. Wow, what a rush! I got a standing ovation. That was when I knew, I was OK and that I could really connect with people!

Best Night # 2 - I recently played a gig that was quite unusual. It was in the lobby of a world class performance venue. My Band and I were the entertainment while the delegates of this conference met and mingled in a Trade Show like atmosphere.
Since people were not seated in a concert setting, we could just play and have fun. There was definitely something in the air that day as the band members were in rare top form, so much so that in the middle of one of our numbers one of them shouted out, "Is anyone recording this?" We were all in the groove and it was just phenomenal!

What was extra special for me was that out of the crowd of 400 or so people, about half knew of me but NOT as a musician. So to see me leading the band and hear me playing, listening to the performance excellence of my band and really enjoying the groove, wow, the expressions on their faces was all that I needed! I could not have asked for more acknowledgements!
Best Night # 3 - Having the opportunity to perform for the crowd on a Smooth Jazz Cruise in the Eastern Caribbean was just a dream come true. Backed by well known performers in the Smooth Jazz world made it feel like I was living in a musical paradise! After the performance, I even had passengers on the ship passing me in the hallways and on the elevators and saying things like
"You're the flute player?" "Wow, you're so good!" "Oh look, she's the one who was playing the flute.” It made me feel very special. – By John Beaudin |
