Patrice Rushen No Stranger to Sampling
April 19, 2003 - You've no doubt noticed the sneaky resemblance that certain Will Smith and George Michael tunes have to Patrice Rushen's Smooth Jazz classic 'Forget Me Nots.' Well don't fret for Rushen she got credit on Will Smith's 1997 hit Men in Black and George Michaels Fast Love from 1996. Rushen says she likes it when younger artists sample her work and calls it a high compliment." I love it" she says. "And now that I think the understanding is to properly be able to protect the people who are the originators and the writers of the material, it's wonderful". It's not uncommon for Smooth Jazz listeners to ask who's that lady doing that Will Smith tune. Forget Me Nots was originally released in 1982 on her Straight from the Heart Lp and remains a mainstay on Smooth Jazz Radio.
