Melody Gardot Shines After Near Death Accident
March 28, 2008 – It was just 5 years ago that Melody Gardot was thrown off her bike, t-boned when a car blew through a red light. It was November, she was only 19 living in her native Philadelphia and the prognosis was grim.

The singer suffered a traumatic brain injury and could barely stand sound or even light and could only sit up for a few minutes each day. The accident forced her to wear dark glasses and a hearing aid. Interestingly her doctors suggested she use music as a healing tool. Not a popular choice for someone who senses are on high alert. In spite of herself Gardot started playing piano, teaching herself to play she began writing her own tunes and created a project that would later be called "Some Lessons - The Bedroom Sessions."

After listening to the promising work-in-progress a close friend started a MySpace page for her and slowly her audience was built. Grammy winner Glenn Barratt also became a fan and after much coaxing Gardot finally allowed him to engineer the project. Today Melody Gardot is a successful artist and creator of “Worrisome Heart” on the verve label. She has the originality and freshness that Norah Jones displayed on her debut album. Appropriately no one out there really sounds like Gardot. Like her story, she is one of a kind. – by John Beaudin
