Lalah Hathaway Fought To Get "Better and Better"
July 13, 2005 - Lalah Hathaway, who appeared with Kirk Whalum, Paul Jackson Jr, and Brian Culbertson in June 18th's Luther Vandross tribute show "For Always, For Luther", had to fight for use of the Mike City penned ballad "Better and Better", which is currently climbing the charts. The romantic tune, which appears on Hathaway's latest "Outrun the Sky", was written by City some time ago, and he had promised it to another artist. Hathaway heard it about two or three years ago and loved it. Every time he played it she would say, "Now why--now why did you give that song to someone? You know it's my song." Finally, while recording Sky, she began a relentless campaign which resulted in Mike agreeing to let her have the song. - by Cheryl Philips
