Kevin
Toney Jazzin' Up Nelly Song
October
3, 2003 - As a very prolific writer Kevin Toney says his first thought
when putting together a new album is never on what Pop song to cover.
The pianist told Smooth Jazz Now if he goes down that road the
song "has to have a melody that really sings on the piano."
Nelly's big hit "Dilemma" fit the bill, "I wanted something
that would be recognizable immediately" says Toney adding, "I
wanted to give my own spin to it and I think what I gave it was my
personality in it plus of course a jazzier interpretation." Like
the Nelly/ Kelly Rowland version Toney's take is also a duet featuring
old friend and master guitarist Paul
Jackson Jr. who "made
it extra special" according to the keyboardist. Toney's latest
album is "Sweet Spot" on the Shanachie label. Read
part one of our interview with Kevin Toney.
