His career is trailblazing, prolific and standard setting to say the least! Now with “Floating Point” he has once again set new and daring standards for aspiring jazz artists to attain. If I had to put a label on the music it would be near fusion-jazz yet still attains the world music flow to it, with some stunning compositions and playing on it. While the disc was recorded in India and John used predominately Indian musician accompaniment, it still has a modern and atmospheric feel to it with soaring solos and compelling percussion. Now well into his 60’s, John McLaughlin’s creativity is still striving for new heights as evident here on his highly anticipated new recording.
On each of the tracks except for the mellow vibe of ‘Maharina’ he is supplemented by a superb young cast of Indian musicians who all showcase the ability to combine the artistic, with the profound and the spiritual for an end result that is breathtaking at times with its’ depth of playing. |

The core of the tracks feature drummer Ranjit Barat, percussionist Sivamini, the subtle keyboards of Luiz Banks and stunning young French bass virtuoso Hadrien Feraud with the incomparable guitar workings of John McLaughlin.
They are joined by guest soloists who find a way to kidnap our senses briefly before returning us to the present. The compositions are complex yet flowing with not just great solos but well thought out breaks and rhythms all the while utilizing the talents of a master John McLaughlin guitar and synth-axe performances. Highlights are found on every track but here are my 3 favourites. ‘Abbaji’ has smooth flowing easy to digest solos over a ferocious drums and percussion bed that will beg for replay on your player. The mix and overall sound is amazing on this track and should be another classic for the huge McLaughlin library of fan favorites. |

The playing on the selection titled ‘Raju’ is uplifting and inspiring with a feeling of musical joy exploding from the musicians through the speakers that is infectious and complex in it’s performance…there must have been a very positive vibe in the studio on this one as the band is cooking.
‘14U’ is another mind expanding performance by John and his band with a stirring flute solo from Naveen Kumar that weaves through a tight rhythm section groove and Johns’ stylish fretwork.
There are 8 total tracks of musical expression and superb performance on this new John McLaughlin cd and if you are a fan of his solo work or maybe a fan of the criminally underappreciated Mahavishnu Orchestra you should definitely give this a spin and enjoy one the of true legends of jazz in his creative mode…because every John McLaughlin release over the last few decades was and is an important musical event. - by Paul Ericson |
