Canadian Idol Finale Sets Viewing Records
September 18, 2003 - He may look like Buddy Holly but the winner of the first Canadian Idol has a style all his own. Ryan Malcolm(right), a Kingston, Ontario waiter won the hearts and votes of Canadians with the majority of votes on Tuesday night. An amazing 3.3 million votes had to be tabulated and the series has also become the biggest series in Canadian TV history when roughly 2.65 million people watched Monday's episode. It also gave the CTV series an average of 1.98 million viewers, surpassing the 1989-90 series "Road to Avonlea" to become the most successful Canadian series ever. The biggest news however just came in today with CTV announcing the Tuesday night's two-hour grand finale officially put the series into the history books. A staggering 3.6 million Canadians watched the final 30 minutes of the finale. The first Canadian Idol series was certainly as slick as its American counterpart. The judging from Jake Gold, Sass Jordan, Farley Flex, and Zack Werner was fair, constructive and very honest. Host Ben Mulroney, son of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney sometimes seemed quite nervous and a little out of his league hosting such a big production. It actually made us miss Ryan Seacrest, imagine that!
