American Music Award Winners
November 17, 2003 - Soul veteran
Luther Vandross(left) and rapper 50 Cent led the winners with two trophies each at last nights American Music Awards. Vandross who suffered a stroke on April 16th of this year won for best male R&B performer and favorite soul-R&B album for his most recent CD, "Dance with My Father." The singer who according to his representatives is far from fully recovered can speak but needs assistance to walk. His mother, Mary Vandross, accepted both awards on his behalf. "I'm so very sorry that Luther cannot be here tonight in person," she told the crowd, after a brief moment of tearful speechlessness. "I'm here to represent him and say thanks to all of you who made this possible." 50 Cent, who did not attend the ceremony, was honored as best male rap artist and best rap-hip-hop album for "Get Rich or Die Tryin,'" a gritty CD about his many brushes with death on the street. Unlike the Grammy's the American Music Awards allows lip-synching and there was no shortage of unplugged microphones specifically with Britney Spears opening the show with a performance of her new single "Me Against the Music."
