Peter White's Thoughts on Funk and Groove Music
April 15. 2010 – Smooth Jazz, like many other niche formats, is surrounded by fans that are loyal and active in keeping the format alive. That’s why there are so many fan sites available that feature nothing but positive vibes and that includes only glowing reviews for everything that gets released. Peter White, never a musician to shy away from his true feelings, says he’s not a fan of everything that happens to the format. “I do feel that a lot of Smooth Jazz musicians tend me be obsessed with the Funk and the Groove,” says White, “and everything comes out sounding the same and what you get is the same song written by many different people.”
Peter White was a special guest on the Smooth Jazz Now TOP 30 COUNTDOWN and spoke with our PD John Beaudin. Here is his full quote.
"
I Do Feel that a lot of Smooth Jazz, If you want to use that term, it’s a radio term really it’s not a term that musicians use really, Smooth Jazz musicians tend to be obsessed with the funk and the groove and everything comes out sounding the same and what you get is the same song written by many different people and it all sounds the same and I’ve never really gone that route. I’ve actually sometimes actively tried to avoid it because it sounds like everything is.. It’s a very American feel and what I wanted to get on this album (Good Day) is a much more European feel. This is my roots, the Classical side of me also lets explore some Euro-Disco. (laughing) Rick Braun says that every time I start going with the four-on-the-floor, he goes ‘There you go Euro-Disco once more’ and I go ‘yeah, I like it.’
You know I don’t really have a history of playing Hip-Hop or R&B, I mean I like it and I dabble in it and I think it’s fun but to me I think it’s one small aspect of the music I do. Hopefully on this album there’s a lot of variety and it doesn’t all sound like I’m trying to write the same song over and over again in an effort to be accepted. I’ve never really written like that. I’ve always written in the way that I find that the music turns me on whether it’s slow, fast, medium tempo, it doesn’t matter it just has to excite me." - by Shannon Edwards

He told Smooth Jazz Now it was quite easy, "Sure enough Paul called Christopher and he came by and you know his voice sounds exactly the same as you heard it twenty years ago. I mean everyone remembers the first time they heard Christopher Cross in 1980 with "Ride Like the Wind." In fact most of Peter White's albums have spent time on the Billboard charts. He was introduced to most of us via his first big gig with Al Stewart dating back to "Year of The Cat" in 1976. Peter White Gets Confidential
January 9, 2004 - Peter White calls his next album his most intimate disc to date. The guitarist is set to release his "Confidential' on Columbia this March 23. The first single the soulful "Talkin' Bout Love" features horn arrangements by Jerry Hey and is being serviced to Radio as you read this. As reported earlier on this page Christopher Cross will be featured on Brenda Russell's "She's In Love." Other guest stars include Chris Botti, Brian Culbertson, Mindi Abair, Steve Ferrone, Lenny Castro, Paulinho DaCosta, Michael Paulo, Rex Rideout, Mathew Hager, and Steve Dubin. "By 'confidential' I mean personal and revealing; that's exactly what this record is to me," White explained. "I play from the heart, which is where music ultimately comes from. It's about tapping into the soul and allowing the emotions within to pour forth. The battle is to trust your instincts without trying to be too clever, which only ends up corrupting the process and seldom works anyway." "Confidential" is White's ninth solo album.
