First Annual Smooth Jazz Festival Bregenz 2008: Smooth Jazz Still to Take Off in Europe
Sept. 23, 2008 - Bregenz is a beautiful Austrian town located by the Lake of Constance, close to the Swiss and German borders. It was then the perfect venue for the first smooth jazz festival ever organised in Europe. The event took place over the last week end of August (29th and 30th) inside the beautiful Festival House, close to the lake of Constance. The festival’s organisers, Bernd Leinfelder and Christian Boessner did a great job in creating an appealing atmosphere (various bars and a catering service to make smooth jazz lovers feel like home).  So the “smooth style” was definitively present.

The festival kicked off around 17.30 with Italian  nu-jazz band Gabin, composed of bassist Massimo Bottini and DJ Filippo Clarry, backed up by a female vocalist. Their musical mixture of pop/lounge meeting jazz with synthetic elements was not very convincing.

Even the interpretation of their hit “Into My Soul” (featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater on the original version) did not have the necessary drive to warm up the small audience.

More people came to see the key protagonists of that evening: famous guitarist Chieli Minucci (Special EFX’s co-founder), sophisticated Swiss keyboardist Alex Bugnon and styled soprano sax player Marion Meadows. The musicians played together for the first time, with singer Pat Appleton’s band support.

They delivered a great performance, blending tracks from each musician, the whole coordinated by Minucci. The set started with some of  Alex Bugnon’s compositions, then came the beautiful Stevie Wonder’s cover “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers” displaying Minucci’s amazing guitar style and Marion Meadow’s soulful sax. Unfortunately, the set was too short and after such musical quality, it was difficult to raise the bar higher.

However, German bossa-jazz-soul outfit De-Phazz came as a great surprise. This open band was led by its founder, German-Austrian producer and sound designer Pit Baumgartner with the backing of sensual female vocalist Pat Appleton, front man singer Karl Frierson and a bunch of skilled musicians. Their sophisticated lounge pop music was well received by the audience.

Unfortunately after both performances, most of the spectators left and there were not more than 50 people to welcome the last artist of the evening: globe trotter sax player and multi-instrumentist Praful and his sound system, featuring a DJ and a percussionist. Praful did his best to deliver his crossover music (jazz, electronic beats and world music sounds). The native German and Amsterdam-based musician would have probably liked to see a more packed up dance floor for this after-show party.

The second day of the festival (Saturday August 30th) saw more people attending the various gigs. It started with German-Liberian singer Pat Appleton and her band. The artist, who was great with De-Phazz, delivered an uninspired performance sounding more as a conventional rock/pop concert in a trendy bar than a genuine smooth jazz act.

Fortunately, then came up the evening’s musical attraction: English star guitarist Peter White featuring great sax player Jaared , guest Italian sax player Rocco Ventrella and Pat Appleton’s resilient musicians (their third performance in a go). White’s joy of entertaining people was obvious, as the popular guitarist played eclectic mix of his compositions and famous covers, woven together with great musical arrangements and  an outstanding performance by vibrant Jared, who blew his horn with soul and emotion.

He connected not only to people, but also to his band, as Jared performed tracks of his latest release “Addiction”. Other guests included sax player Rocco Ventrella, who showcased his talents as a soulful and energetic musician, and the marathon singer Pat Appleton, who performed a duo with Peter White on Basia’s famous hit “Another Day” Then the musical celebration continued with an inspired Marion Meadows, who hit the stage for one track. The concert terminated with a musical firework and a great rendition of classic Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water” and some other covers, that got the audience in a very upbeat mood.

The following main act was sax queen Candy Dulfer, surrounded by great sidemen: guitarist Ulco Bed, keyboardist Thomas Bank and trumpet player Jan van Duikeren who displayed their talents as skilled soloists. The Dutch musician, who likes to blend various musical genres, started her show with her smash hit “Lily Was Here” and then got into a funky mood. She shared the stage with her long-time friend, talented Dutch female soul singer Moon Baker. They performed two tracks of her solo debut album “ABC Of Romance”. Candy evidenced her massive funk jazz sound and her singing/rapping with tracks from her latest album “Candy Store” (“Summertime”, “Music Love” and other groove-oriented tracks). It is true that Candy’s performance (sax and singing) was more funk-oriented than smooth jazz, but she managed to entertain the crowd and got everybody in a party mood.

The after-show party featured the festival’s last performance, Dutch lounge duo Adani and Wolf delivering their quite ordinary drum and bass/lounge music, with sax player Rocco Ventrella performing as a guest.

Globally speaking, this first smooth jazz festival on the Old Continent was a musical success, as the key musicians invited did their job quite well. The smooth jazz atmosphere the organisers created and the venue were great. Unfortunately, the audience was scattered over the weekend. Probably the warm-up concerts and the after-show parties need some rethinking. It is really hoped that this summer chilling musical experience will again take place in 2009, so that smooth jazz can really take off on the Old Continent. - By Akbar Nour
