John Beaudin is a true pioneer in Smooth Jazz. He has dedicated most of his broadcasting career to the genre. In the mid eighties when the Wave was launching in Los Angeles Beaudin started his own
Canadian version of the then named NCA (New Adult Contemporary) format in Edmonton at CKXM-FM. It was 1986 and he was programming and hosting Night-Lite, 42 hours of Contemporary Jazz and New Age music per week. In the early nineties Beaudin moved his formula to CHUM's QM-FM in Vancouver. That show paved the way for this current site with a special radio feature on Contemporary Jazz called "Smooth Jazz Now" which debuted in the early nineties. Beaudin says, "Smooth Jazz Now debuted on radio as a short feature much like an entertainment feature that we did once an hour and it ran from 1991 until 2001 so when we rebranded the name of the site from Smooth Jazz Canada to Smooth Jazz Now it wasn't a surprise to any of the listeners from Vancouver, they knew me the Smooth Jazz Now guy anyway. That version of Night-Lite with Smooth Jazz Now features lasted until 2001. That same year he embarked on his most ambitious project yet, the Smooth Jazz Canada website. He changed the name to Smooth Jazz Now.com in 2004. The site features interviews and music news on the top players in the game. He is currently the afternoon drive host and Program Director of california 103(formally the Breeze), a Smooth Jazz station in Calgary and host of Lovesongs at QM-FM Vancouver. Beaudin is also co-creator and co-chair of the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. He was a nominee for Broadcaster of the Year for the first two years. In 2005 Beaudin said, "I'm honored to be nominated among such talented people like Alexander Zonjic, Cameron Smith, Walle Larsson, and Vicki van Dyke. I feel like we are all building something here. We may all work for different people but our vision is very similar, we all love this music, we are all willing to go the extra mile to make this format work." Ross Porter of Jazz FM91 in Toronto says, "John Beaudin is the real deal. His commitment, insight and connection to Smooth Jazz music is unparalleled in broadcasting. - by Anthony Smith

Wyatt Cavanaugh Writer Producer May 2004 Media Advantage, Edmonton - Knowing that he needed a broadcasting degree to move further, he headed off to Alberta in August of 1979 where he then received that degree in broadcasting from CHIT in Edmonton. John then became the first student in their history to be hired by a major market station at 96 K-Lite in Edmonton. Filled with a voracious appetite for learning John honed his broadcast skills and refined his sound during years there. It was at K-Lite where John spawned an idea for a music direction in which he had been tinkering with since his high school years. The format was a hybrid of Smooth Jazz and New Age. John took his idea to CKXM in 1986 and offered an entire package. 'Night-Lite' was an immediate hit with the much sought after 35-54 market and launched John into the forefront of this new music format. Handling 42 hours of on-air programming and the job of Music Director, John quickly became a worldwide leader in promoting this rapidly growing genre. Interviewing leading artists and executives, combined with John's understanding made him an expert in this genre. His ultra-smooth voice and highly personalized style became a hit with both artists and fans alike. After five years of growth and experimentation John decided that it was time for a new larger market for his audience.

John's next move was that of a consultant for the CHUM Group of Companies. The broadcasting firm had heard of John's success with the format in Edmonton and hired him in 1990 to consult on a CRTC license for Smooth Jazz which they were working on for the Vancouver market.

CHUM knew that John's unique talent and genre understanding were integral to their total understanding of this exciting genre. CHUM ultimately decided to purchase a station instead of starting one. Their next choice was to hire him to anchor the evening show in this large radio market. John resurrected Night-Lite in the Vancouver market and it was a hit on -air from 1991 to 2001. John currently hosts the highly rated 'Lovesongs' at CHUM's QM-FM in Vancouver plus the afternoon drive show on New Caps new Smooth Jazz station california 103 (formally the Breeze) in Calgary. He is also the Program Directo of the station.

CHUM utilized his industry leading understanding in another application in the fall of 2001. John appeared on CHUM's panel, testifying at the CRTC hearings as a consultant for their application.
